The Twisted Psychology Of Browser Tabs - And Why We Can't Get Rid Of Them - Fast Company

I have over 200 tabs open right now. My laptop is making a sound that can only be described as a death rattle. My colleagues don't understand how I can work. And yet, I can't close any of them. I will read them. I promise I will ?someday? This recent Fast Company report delves deep into the psychology of browser tabs and showcases once more the indelible impact internet browsing has on the human mind. It also shows I'm not totally crazy ?I'm just human. And yes, I picked this as my Weekend Round-Up to prove exactly that to my coworkers. (Looking at you, Jeff.)

An Invitation To The Cicada Party - The New York Times

Periodical cicadas are an unusual and fascinating reminder of order in the natural world. The individual cicadas that form brood X have been biding their time underground for exactly 17 years, a period that at first appears deceptively arbitrary. Now that it's time for their moment in the sun, cicadas are making their presence known in a major way ?in our back yards and in cicada-focused stories online, filled with cicada fun facts. For example, did you know that this year's cicadas are composed of three distinct species, each with its own mating call? This recent article in The New York Times shows you where in the eastern United States you can expect to find Brood X and what you need to know to hear and spot them.

Only Shooting Stars Break The Mold: The Massive Musical Footprint of Shrek - The Ringer

"During that whole opening sequence, as Smash Mouth is playing and Shrek's farting in the mud pool, I was just sweating.?This quote from Shrek co-director Andrew Adamson totally caught me by surprise when reading this fun piece over on The Ringer. It's a deep dive into the film's soundtrack, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and how the music has managed to live on across two decades. Shrek was one of the few computer-animated films to break through the Pixar wall in the early aughts. This is my wife's favorite movie ?and she grew up on it with Polish dubbing (meaning no Mike Myers and no Eddie Murphy). Give Shrek a rewatch this weekend and rekindle your love of Smash Mouth when you're done.

The Case of The Disappearing Cicada - The New York Times

A couple of months ago, my wife was reading the news and stumbled upon her least favorite topic: insects. They don't often make headlines but the cicada is no ordinary insect, and it's safe to say Cicada-mania is upon us. The New York Times published a piece this week that says the typical Northeast brood, Brood X may not show up as in years past. Some are disappointed, others not so much. I won't say what camp my wife falls in but I typically do the bug smashing around my house.

Please Don't Kiss the Chickens! - The Cut

Have you ever seen a more perfect headline? I was planning to share this Sohla El-Waylly and Padma Lakshmi interview, which is great and you should read, but I got distracted. This chicken story is short and straightforward but packed with gems. I love news that falls into the category of 'surprising that this had to be said out loud,' and boy do these poultry guidelines certainly fit the bill. The writer is clearly having a terrific time conveying the most important chicken news of the week, and that's what makes it such a fun read.
